David Patrick Kelly (Detroit, January 23, 1951) is an American actor, musician, and composer, widely known for a number of memorable roles in film and television. Throughout his long career he has portrayed distinctive characters, often marked by an eccentric, intense, or unsettling personality. Among his most famous performances are Luther in the cult film The Warriors (1979), Jerry Horne in the television series Twin Peaks, and T-Bird in the film The Crow (1994).

Kelly was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Margaret Elizabeth Murphy Kelly (1915–2010) and Robert Corby Kelly Sr. He grew up in a large family with six siblings. From an early age he developed a strong interest in the performing arts, becoming passionate about both acting and music—two creative paths that would remain central throughout his life.

His international breakthrough came in 1979 with the role of Luther, the unpredictable leader of the Rogues gang in The Warriors. Although the character appears on screen for a relatively short time, Kelly managed to make him one of the most memorable villains of late-1970s cinema. His performance, marked by eerie expressions and nervous gestures, culminates in the famous scene in which Luther taunts the protagonists by clinking three bottles between his fingers while calling out the now legendary line: “Warriors… come out to play!”. This moment has since become iconic and remains one of the most recognizable scenes in cult movie history.

Interestingly, only a few years later Kelly played another character named Luther in the 1982 film 48 Hrs., directed by Walter Hill, further cementing his reputation as an actor perfectly suited for intense and unpredictable roles.

Over the years Kelly has built an extensive and diverse filmography, working with numerous notable directors and appearing in films of many different genres. Some of the most recognizable titles in his career include Commando (1985), Dreamscape (1984), Wild at Heart (1990) directed by David Lynch, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990), Crooklyn (1994) directed by Spike Lee, The Crow (1994), K-PAX (2001), Flags of Our Fathers (2006) directed by Clint Eastwood, and John Wick (2014). Thanks to his versatility he has been able to move naturally between action films, dramas, thrillers, and independent productions.

Kelly has also maintained a strong presence on television. His most widely recognized TV role is Jerry Horne in the cult series Twin Peaks, created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The eccentric and flamboyant character quickly became one of the most distinctive figures in the show’s universe. Over the years Kelly has also made guest appearances in several well-known television series, including Miami Vice, Moonlighting, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Gossip Girl.

Alongside his work in film and television, Kelly has built an impressive stage career. He has performed on Broadway and in numerous theaters across the United States, appearing in both classic and contemporary productions. He has worked with important companies such as the Hartford Stage Company and the American Repertory Theater, playing major roles in works like Woyzeck, Tartuffe by Molière, Othello by William Shakespeare, and Henry IV by Luigi Pirandello. In 1998 he received a prestigious Obie Award, which honors outstanding achievements in Off-Broadway theater.

In addition to acting, David Patrick Kelly is also an accomplished musician and composer. During the 1970s he regularly performed in some of New York City’s most important music venues, including the legendary CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, and Reno Sweeney—clubs that played a key role in the development of the punk and alternative music scenes. In 2008 he released the album Rip Van Boy Man, which features original songs along with live recordings from his performances in New York clubs during the mid-1970s.

Outside of his artistic work, Kelly has a strong interest in martial arts and Eastern disciplines. He holds a second-degree black belt (Nidan) in Seido Juku karate and practices several forms of Tai Chi, including the Chen and Yang styles. In his personal life, Kelly has been married since August 14, 2005 to actress and playwright Juliana Francis. The couple has one daughter, Margarethe Jane, who was born in 2008.
Over more than four decades of work, David Patrick Kelly has established himself as one of the most recognizable character actors in American film and television. His ability to portray eccentric, threatening, or unpredictable figures has made him a unique presence on screen, capable of leaving a lasting impression even in relatively small roles. For this reason, his portrayal of Luther in The Warriors remains one of the most iconic villains in cult film history.
